New Blog Profiles

Waleed
posted this on October 03, 2011 05:56

Continuing our effort to refresh NetworkedBlogs and fix existing problems, today we're launching new blog profiles. In this release, we didn't add new features, but we focused on making the existing features better and easier. We removed some rarely used features to free space for better ones coming soon. f you notice a problem please let us know below.

Current known issues that we're working on include slow loading time and not being able to update blog pictures for PRO users. We'll be fixing these in the next day or two.

UPDATE: October 4th

Hi Everyone,

It looks like many of you are not as excited about the new changes as we are. And, yes, that's probably an understatement. Some of you downright hate them. Why fix it if it aint broken, right? If you feel so, then read on. I'll try to explain why we're doing this and how it affects you. And also how it paves the way for a better experience for you and your readers.

Change is annoying, but without it we can't make progress. You might've noticed some errors or issues in the past that remained unsolved for a long time. That's because the original design of NetworkedBlogs was done when we had very few users, and it can't support us anymore. Fixing things takes a very long time, and adding new features is really hard. That results in a lot of frustration on your end. Errors happen, it's part of any software, but no one wants them to remain unfixed too long.
So how do we fix errors faster and get back to adding new features again? We can't patch the old design beyond it's expiration date; we need a major refresh. This update is part of this big redesign that we've been working on for several months. It's necessary if we want to offer you a good experience. Right now you might not feel that it's better because we're in the middle of a transition, and transitions are hard. Some parts are updated and some are not. There is no easy way to do this. But once we're done in the next few weeks, I hope you'll start to see what we planned for. Our goals, at a high level, are: less errors, faster browsing, better features, less errors, easier to understand, and less errors. That is a good thing, right?
We could've done a better job communicating this to you sooner. Sorry for that. We'll do a better job going forward. And as part of that let me tell you what's coming next:
- If you use our 'Blog' tab on your fan page, then you'll notice that it has just been updated as well. The update makes it easier to edit and customize the tab without having to navigate to another page. We also removed the syndication settings from the tab because they were confusing. All syndication settings can be managed from the syndication page.
- Later today we'll be releasing an update to our blog directory. Some of the listings such as "popular blogs by region" and "popular blogs by company" will be removed because the data we need to generate them are taken from Facebook, and Facebook does not provide that data anymore, so our listings are out of sync. The directory will be much simpler.
- If you haven't noticed it, we released a welcome page a few weeks ago that makes it easier to discover blogs that your friends read and write. With that, we don't need the friends menu anymore because it's duplicate. So we'll be removing the 'friends' menu today as well.
- If you're a PRO user, you'll notice that you cannot upload a picture to your blog page yet (pictures that you have already uploaded work, though). This is part of changes we're making to improve our premium offerings. I'll write a separate detailed post about that in the coming days.
So, yes, we pushed big changes. And there are a few more coming soon as we continue to replace old parts with new ones. And as we transition, there will be the inevitable bugs and issues that are part of any change, but we'll fix them quickly. At the end of the day, we're working hard to build a better product for you. We understand that change is disruptive, but we hope that you'll like the new benefits that the changes will bring.

UPDATE: October 5th

Everyone,

As promised earlier, here is another update. A detailed blog post will come tomorrow as well.

We just finished pushing several fixes to issues reported to us:

- Now the followers are listed in order. The most recent followers are listed first so you can tell who joined recently.

- Removed the annoying scrollbars on the Blog tab on fan pages (if you use one) .

- Several bug fixes that affected blog editing and logging in.

We also pushed the following updates:

- A new search system to replace our old limited search. Now you can find blogs beyond the top 50 that we had before. Also, you can find blogs even if they have less than 20 followers, which was a bit complicated before.

- A new blog directory. With this update you're not limited to seeing only the top 50 blogs in each topic. Now you can click on "more" to expand the list.

- With this update, we're mostly done moving all our pages that were inside Facebook to our Website. That change allows faster page loads, less errors, and bigger space so things are not too cramped.

Next, we're focusing on fixing any issues that are still open. Such as improving the invite feature so you can hide friends you invited already. Also, we're finalizing the new features for PRO users (more details coming soon).

If you encounter any error caused by the new updates, please post them here or open a new ticket. We're fixing these problems as quickly as we find them. Thank you.

I would like to only invite new friends from Facebook that I have not invited before. It seems I cannot find the previously uninvited people as I used to be able to do. How do I sort them out?

Gwen and Patricia,

Great points. Both options, changing the blog URL and filtering out invited friends, will be added in the next couple of days.

The limitation of only being able to invite 8 people at a time is absurd.  Also, the new format doesn't cull out those who are already subscribers to my blog.  If the intention is to put limitations on the ability to invite people in order to avoid spam, including all of my Friends List in the invitation pick window renders that "feature" null.  Please filter out friends who are already subscribers.

Also, please include readership stats in all of the standard feed engines.  I can read stats on every other subscriber service to my blog in my site's logs, but not Networked Blogs.

Kelley,

The limitation on the number of invites will be raised in the couple of days once we finish implementing the filter to hide invited friends.

What do you mean by readership stats?

Kelley

Thanks for your reply and attention to detail!

Through my ISP I can check stats on all of my sites, including blog readership.  They include all major traffic outlets and readers (Feedburner, Yahoo, Google).  I can look at each of these and see where the most traffic comes from and compare. It would be really nice for Networked Blogs to be included in these kinds of stat readers.

Please stop making changes.. They are never better... also why don't photos show up when I copy the URl from a post? They used to and I could select which photo I wanted to use.

How do you syndicate now and blast the blogs to subscribers...

My question is related to one of the points Ann makes, too. Sometimes I like to repost my blog entries manually, and I used to be able to select which photo from the entry I wanted to use each time I posted it. Now it just forces me to use the first photo in the entry every time I repost it. Is there a way to fix that? Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Ann, Ramona,

We never had the option to manually select a picture at post time. Maybe you're thinking of the share feature on Facebook? It's an interesting feature, though. I'm adding it to our list for future consideration.

Kelley,

Does it show you the total subscribers to your feed from each reader? Or does it show you the number of hits on individual articles? We're looking into this space, but we don't want to duplicate what others are already doing.

Yes, I was able to select a photo.. when I copied the URl and posted it and now there is this stupid deal that says" this is a blog I thought you would like.' I don't like the change in this .. please change it back...

And the manual syndication isn't working well.. not posting...  terrible all these changes.. not good, not good at all.. what is the purpose? Terrible terrible!

How so? I checked and I see that you had published a few posts and they show up on your fan page. Can you give more details?

Our posts are supposed to auto publish to all our targets, only 2 of 7 today. If my author has to go back and manually syndicate her targets after every blog post, the service is not user friendly

After the first syndication.. it states done... after the second it freezes in an empty frame.. so I can't go to the next one... a disaster...

and YES... I was able to copy the url of a past blog article then select which photo I wanted to...now some canned thingy comes up and it is through networked blogs.. so all changes are not better.. with you or FB...

My blog' 'Science and Religion in Islam: The Link' is a premium Blog and I usually get at least a few new followers per week. Yet my number of followers has remained static at 999 followers for the past 2-3 weeks. I do not believe that this is an accurate reflection of the true number of followers that I have, which I am certain has exceeded 1000. Could you look into this for me please? Could this be because of the new changes to NetworkedBlogs? Thanks.

I can't believe you'd make changes without first testing them to make sure they work properly and secondly without asking people who use the service if the changes would be beneficial and useful. I can't believe you'd make changes that would prevent me from bothering people with multiple requests to join my blog when they've already said no once. I can't believe you'd make changes that inhibit bloggers from reaching their audience. Have you ever heard the phrase, "If it ain't broke don't fix it"? Now, because of your other idiotic rule that a blogger can only invite 8 people a day, in combination with the fact that a successful blogger often will generate far more than 8 friend requests a day, it can take me weeks or months to invite all my latest Facebook friends to my blog. You know, two other things were recently altered. One was that you seem to have removed the comments section. That was a useful tool for a few reasons. It enabled discussion on my blog page about my blog, and it also allowed me to get feedback from my followers. Another change might be your issue or Facebook's, not sure, but I no longer have easy access to my Facebook page for my blog. I have to hunt back through months of posts every time I want to get to my blog page just to invite my newest Facebook friends. I hate that and it is an incredible waste of my time and effort. Last thing I want to say: we bloggers use this as a tool, it's not a game; we have something to say, we have followers who want to read what we say, this is our way of reaching people and communicating ideas, feelings, art, writing, philosophy and many other types of communication. When you mess with it, you prevent us from using our discourse as well as drive a wedge between us and our readers. Keeping active readers is dependent on regular publication. You have interrupted our ability to inform our public as to the addition of new material. We can lose active readers because they might fall out of the habit of reading our posts. I don't like this, oh we'll fix it in a few days. Put it back like it was now, and test it to make sure it works before you change it. Oh and please, notify us, the people who use your product at least a few days in advance of changes. Isn't that common courtesy? Goodness gracious. I can't believe the ineptitude and lack of foresight you people have shown in your execution of your changes.

Oh my goodness, I just re-read your post. You're going to make changes to the syndication too? Please test them and make sure they work before you unilaterally incorporate them. Hey, also, sending info to your users before your execute the changes on the exact nature of the changes as well as how to use them so we don't have to spend minutes to hours to days to maybe longer to figure them out on our own in the dark would be not only courteous, but professional.

Waleed,

Still no button.  I cleared my cache and restarted the browser, logged out of Facebook, turned off pop-up blocking (both via whitelisting and completely shutting it down), and nothing.  When using Firefox, I get a pop-up Facebook login window as soon as I reach the Networked Blogs page.  In IE, it automatically logs me in.  Chrome gets to the login page and I can't go any further.  And this only started happening yesterday.  Before, as long as I was logged into Facebook, I got right through.

The new changes to FB have completely altered my blog traffic. Instead of receiving 800+ impressions on my posts on my fan page and profile,  I now only get 30 or 40 at most. Hi,

I have 2 problems:

1. My blog's RSS feed shows only abstracts in the feed.
I understand that now the app does not pull pictures for blogs which have RSS feeds that shows abstracts.
Why? My Rss feed was always showing abstracts and the app used to show pictures.
I don't want to change my RSS definitions just for the app.

2. I can't change the blog Topics.

Thank you!

Hi, Waleed,

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I used to be able to choose the thumbnail associated w/my blog post when I manually posted/shared a blog entry on my FB page. So, for example, today I reposted my latest blog entry (http://www.sapac.org/blog/2011/10/03/desispotting-october-2011/) on my FB page (http://www.facebook.com/SAPACchicago). This particular blog entry is a listing of events and includes 22 images. I used to be able to choose which of those 22 images would show up as the thumbnail when I reposted the entry on my FB page. Now I am always stuck with the first image in my entry as the thumbnail. Do you know why this is and how I can fix it? Thanks!

That's odd because we do a lot of testing on Chrome and Firefox and we can't reproduce this issue! Also, the login mechanism used to access this forum is the same for the rest of the site, so it's puzzling why it let's you get into the forum but not to other pages! Can you send me the link to the page you're trying to access? Also, what operating system are you using?

Ramona,

I confirmed the issue you mentioned. But it's not related to NetworkedBlogs. What you describe is what's happening when you post a link to your fan page directly without using NetworkedBlogs. It might be a facebook change. Or it might be something specific to that link. I can't tell because it's not something we manage or work with, it's a native Facebook functionality.

Waleed, I used to receive a page that showed all new friends.  It is VERY disappointing to not see that page in the new iteration.

The removal of a primary

Well, you just put me out of the blog business on Facebook and with NetworkedBlogs. You statement says I will no longer be able to invite friends. Your statement also suggested that to use some features I have to run the NetworkedBlog through a "fan" page. Well, frankly, I have always thought of fan pages as vanity gone wild. I'll have nothing to do with them. So, you're saying I may as well stop using NetworkedBlogs. So I will. Bye.

Are you referring to the list of followers sorted by new followers first? If so, then yes, this is coming back soon. Possibly tonight if we manage to finish it, or tomorrow at the latest.

Don,

Maybe you misunderstood parts of my post!! You can invite friends. In fact it's easier to invite now. You can invite 10 friends per day as opposed to 8. And the number will go up once we finish the code to hide friends that have been invited already.  Also, you don't have to use fan pages!! Not sure why you thought so!

waleed, please reverse the order of the comments on this page and place the latest comments at the top. change is not a problem as long as it is managed well. the changes regarding this blog tool were not managed at all but thrown into a chaotic swill with the expectation we'll all blindly drink, like those victims in jonestown. how about a little warning first, next time?

I agree Ann! This is a total joke! This app..the people who run it have done EVERYTHING they can to prevent me from inviting my facebook friends to follow my blog! It went from unlimited invites, to 16, to 8...and NOW YOU ARE PREVENTING ME FROM DOING ANYTHING I WANT TO DO!
I can't wait until people find out who you criminals really are!

I don't use this app all that often and it seems like every time I do I'm almost learning it from scratch again.

Today I want to add another blog. I filled everything out and then, after bothering to do all that, I get a little error box that pops up. There is nothing indicating what the error is. The box has a spot for it but it's empty.Nothing on the page indicates a problem specific to any fields I filled in.

Then I decided to edit an old blog. Actually I should delete it but there's not obvious option to do that so I ended up in edit instead. I submitted something, and I got a page with programming error messages.

I'm not a user who's looking for a lot of advanced features. All I want to do is post blog entries on the profile and the page so I can let people find them from there. But at the moment even this basic functionality seems to be missing.

So where do I put a personal message now, when I send the invitations?   Facebook rarely make changes for the better and am not sure that this will improve anything either.  I liked the way network blogged worked apart from the "only 8" invitations allowed which made it very hard with 50 something friends requests a day!   regard Marie xx  http://www.facebook.com/Naiveartbymarie

syndication doesn't work - see details at: http://technical.sabhlokcity.com/2011/09/authentication-error-on-networked-blogs/

basically i get the following error message and nothing works.

"Syndication is enabled for your facebook profile. Authentication error blocked publishing recent posts

This error is resolved now, and future posts will publish as usual. It's listed for reference only. No further action required. When you change your Facebook password or permissions settings, Facebook may revoke publishing permissions, which causes syndication to stop. Visiting this page renews these permissions, so you're all set. This error message will disapper after the next post gets published successfully."

Catherine,

Thank you. Very nice of you.

Dan,

Good point, thanks. I'll update the comments.

Avalanche,

Sorry that you encountered an error. We're looking for these errors and fixing them as we discover them. If you happen to have a copy of that programming error you got, then I can track it and fix it.

Marie,

The new invites don't allow including a personal message. This is not our choice. It's the new Facebook invites box that we have to use because Facebook is phasing out the old invite system.

 Sanjeev,

That error is not related to this update. But, yes, we're aware of it and will work on it next. This particular issue is not a problem on our side. It's the way Facebook manages the authentication system that causes the publishing permissions to expire often. Simply put, Facebook doesn't like automated publishing too much and they're not making it easy to do. So although we cannot fully eliminate the issue because it's not under our control, we can simplify the process to a single click, which we'll do.

Thank you.

I cannot get my blog feed to pull my new blog message.  I hit "pull" and nothing happens.  What is up?  This has been an ongoing problem off and on.  Can you comment on this?

I have tried twice to invite NEW friends but it seems that 'Friends to Invite' includes everyone, both old and new friends. I don't want to bother the old friends with multiple invitations so am not inviting anyone. Have I missed something or is that option there?

Thanks, Waleed

My old blog feed is back - it had been changed some time ago. I hesitate to do anything here in case I make the situation worse, though. There is a redirect that means the blog is found but I wonder if others things have changed?

When I went to invite followers there is no option to invite new friends?!?! Will this change as it's going to annoy the hell out of people if you keep inviting them if you can't remember who you've invited. A pretty ridiculous decision to not have that included... I don't mind change (if it's useful and works) but please don't follow the Facebook way of just seemingly stuffing around for the sake of it.

Hi this was already asked but not answered..whats with the number of impressions dropping so dramatically? I was averaging 3000 through publishing to a community campaign page...now its showing between 100 and 150 each post. Separate comments still show the 3k impressions. Is this a networked blogs change issue or a fb change issue?

I second Paul's comment. I think this is the biggest deal of them all. The number of impressions is directly related to how many people are seeing my blog posts. The huge drop has decreased my blog traffic by over 75%. Please clarify how this will be fixed.

Change as much as we all hate it is the one thing we can count on in life, so I try to be open to it. I am finding that it is still so slow it stalls my computer for a long time. Also I was not given an option to add a personal message which I always do. In addition the old version did not list people who you all ready invited, I think this is extremely important so we aren't driving people nuts with repeated invites although we should have an option to re-invite people if we want to. And lastly I didn't get any confirmation it was sent, so I have no idea if the invitations really went out.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to make comments. I love networked blogs and recommend it to all my fellow digi scrappers. The most useful feature is that it can post all my blog posts to fb and twitter, saving me time! Thanks for a wonderful app!

Ann, I know for a fact that facebook exists as a tool to track and trace those who use it! The mainstream media reported that it was purchased by the NSA, (look it up yourself...those mainstream articles still exist) while excluding that it was for that specific purpose! LOL. This became more and more apparent as it tried to steer people into only actually befriending people "you actually know" and other similar things. As someone who regularly exposes government and media corruption, they have really been messing with me! They were reducing my ability to invite people to follow my blog to only 8 per day, just before this last major "change" to the blog interface. They totally reduced my ability to befriend anyone I chose to a minimum, and now I cant do much of anything, except accept invites from others. It's so obvious what's going on here, and that people who are using this tool as a way to expose corruption are being harassed! Allot of my "friends" here on facebook who do the same have literally reported the same types of things! These "changes" and "problems" are mostly not accidents. It's obvious that facebook's primary existence is to serve a purpose for the government, on the guise of it being a "social networking" tool. Facebook is now, and may have always been simply a tool to help these corrupt government institutions track and trace us in the name of "terrorism" on the back of false flag terror!
I guarantee you Waleed will NEVER admit this, if he even realizes it himself...so you're better off just waiting to see how they eventually manipulate this app, and facebook in general so that they can try to control how people interact with each other.

Waleed,

Figured it out -- I had the Facebook Disconnect extension installed in Chrome, once I disabled it, everything worked fine.  Of course, this means Facebook can once again track the sites I go to, which doesn't exactly thrill me.

My blog post will not post on Follower's News Feed.  It will only show on the FB PAGE and Twitter. But it will not add to any Newsfeed, and there is no manual way for me to even manually publish the post "as" my FB page.

People get to my blog almost solely through their Facebook Follower's News Feed. Having it not show up in a NewsFeed is probably the main reason for the LOW low impressions. Others complaining of low impressions-this may be why for you to: check to see, chances are your last posts since these FB changes never made it to your Followers' Newsfeeds!!

Well, there isn't much point to using Network Blog App at all then, is there? Isn't the main use syndication to followers?

What I've just done is bypass Networked Blogs the old fashioned way, and just manually synidcate myself (AKA sharing a link to that specific blog post)

If this doesn't fix, I might just removed the App altogether.

This doesn't solve the problem though...many of my Friends are not "Followers" and most of my "Followers" are not Friends! So there is really no way to have a blog post reach a follow at all right now, unless they happen to be a friend too and you manually make a status post link to your blog. NOT GOOD!

I joined one week ago. My widget is messed up and doesnt look right on my other wise very pretty blog. why is it duplicating, showing me and my one other follower so far two times, once at the top and once at the bottom. it looks WRONG. i'm tempted to just delete it instead of having something not working on my blog. questions sent to FAQ and help have garnered no response :-) and for the record, i am very versed in IT and did install it correctly; it would appear there might be something wrong with the code that was generated for my blog. (i use blogger). ....help would be appreciated.

Laura, Anthony,

- The invite box shows everyone right now, but it will be updated by tomorrow to hide friends that were invited already.

- Regarding the feed change that came back:  sorry, my bad. It was a hiccup in the data transfer last night. It's fixed now, so feel free to make changes.

Paul, Newburgh, Julia,

We noticed the drop in views as well. This is not related to us, though, or this update. About two weeks ago, Facebook changed how the news feed is displayed. I'm sure you've noticed it. They now display important stories at the top, and everything else below. And they seem to have changed their algorithm as well.

Facebook doesn't make it's algorithm public, but their are two widely known rules:

1. The more you publish, the less likely your friends and fans will see your posts. (high volume of posting is punished)

2. The more your friends and fans interact with your posts (via comments and likes), the more likely that your posts will be seen.

Colleen,

- We're aware of some of the causes of slow pages and we're working on them. It's already a bit faster than the old system, but we're improving that as well. You should see more improvement in speed next week.

- The new Facebook invites don't allow a personal message. I'm afraid that's how Facebook designed them. The old invite system is being phased out by Facebook, so we can't use it anymore.

- By tomorrow, the friends that were already invited will be hidden from the invite box.

Richard,

Glad you fixed it. We tested everything, but never thought to test with the Facebook Disconnect extension. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm still getting the issue everyone else is -- I can manually syndicate to one Facebook feed and the window will go away, but if I do a second one, they window doesn't clear.  It still syndicates, and I only have two feeds I post to, but if I had a third, I wouldn't be able to do it.

It also later shows I've only syndicated it once, even though it shows up in both feeds.

I support your progress!!  I know bugs happen.  Please forgive me if I missed this but it seems as though every one of my friends can be invited to follow my blog again but I certainly do not want to annoy those that I have invited in the past but who do not want to follow.  Are you going to be able to block those that have been invited but did not reply?  I hope I am making myself clear.  :)

I'm all in favor of making necessary changes, and yes, I do believe that there are some changes that are long over due. However, since you haven't told us what you plan, I'm not certain if the changes I think you should make will be made. Therefore, I suggest that in the future you send out a survey to those bloggers that use your system.

I feel that I must mention that although I like being able to send invitations to all my FB friends, I prefer knowing if I have already invited them to join a blog since I don't want to become a nuisance.

Lastly, I hope that whatever has been curtailing my ability to announce new blog posting within the FB system is rectified. And for heavens sake, once the system recognizes us bloggers can we please be allowed to post without being asked to play guess what these letters spell 15 time only to discover that the system knows us but will not let us post! The lack of posting through NetworkedBlogs has caused me to post my blogs latest columns on my FB page.
